Large prominence erupting from the Sun on April 13, 2010

A massive prominence erupted from the Sun on April 13, 2010. The best view of the eruption was from the STEREO Ahead spacecraft, as shown in this COR1 movie, combined with Helium II 304 Angstrom images of the solar disk from EUVI. This was one of the largest prominence eruptions seen during the STEREO mission so far.

Discovery Back Flips for Safety

Space shuttle Discovery completed an eight minute-long Rendezvous Pitch Maneuver, a slow back flip that permitted International Space Station crew members Oleg Kotov and T.J. Creamer to snap high resolution photographs of the shuttles heat shield, or thermal protection system. The digital pictures will be transmitted to imagery experts and managers at Mission Control in Houston where theyll do a routine check for damage.
